Decided to cook all of Frankie’s favourite meals this week whilst he’s recovering & especially with the darker nights there is nothing better than a toad in the hole!
It’s a wholesome inexpensive dinner and it’s so easy to make! I had the flour, milk & eggs in the cupboards already but the meal in total is well under Β£5 and makes at least x4 servings (x6-8 child’s portions).
Shopping List:-
- X8 thick sausages (x12 chipolatas)
- X3 eggs
- 200g plain flour
- 190ml semi-skimmed milk
- X1 onion
- *optional* herbs, salt & pepper
How to:-
- Pre-heat oven to 200c (fan assisted)
- Put the sausages in a casserole dish/roasting tin, drizzle with oil & cook for 10-15 minutes until brown
- Whilst sausages are browning tip flour into a mixing bowl and add all eggs and mix
- Gradually pour in the milk whilst mixing non stop until smooth
- *my Nan always instilled me to mix well by hand but an electric whisk is quicker*
- Leave to stand
- Thinly chop up your onion
- When browned, bring the sausages out and wait for the fat to stop sizzling
- Add the onions and pour in the batter mix
- Cook for 25-30 minutes (don’t open the oven once in, this will cause the batter to deflate!)
- Serve with mash potato & your favourite vegetables, we had carrots & runner beans with gravy ππΌπ
