The Dick Turpin, Wickford (A127)

I’ve been coming to The Dick Turpin for years for birthday dinners & cheap meals as it’s just up the road from us so if I meet the girls for a drink at a neutral point, celebrate a family birthday and we don’t want to drive and now more so now I have Frankie as it has a softplay and park for to keep him entertained if we fancy a drink or a Sunday carvery.

It’s been a Fayre & Square and not always had the best of names for itself but recently it’s become a Green King restaurant and started offering a carvery and the decor has really improved! All the little touches like the chalkboards with cocktails & gin choices, chair coverings and the flowers in the toilets have improved the atmosphere in there so much.

The softplay indoors is small but it’s ideal for keeping Frankie entertained which is why we choose to go there so much, it’s usually clean and not that busy with a ball pit, slide and other softplay.

There’s also a big outdoor park area with slides, bridges small & big which is clean and gated off from the car park & benches so you can enjoy a drink on sunny days whilst they go in and out of the park and softplay!

The food has always been OK, it’s typical pub grub and we’ve never had a bad meal but since the menu has changed hands to Green King the choice is more varied and there’s lunch options too. Dick Turpin – menu.

I went last week and met a friend for lunch and shared a macaroni cheese with Frankie, the portion size was huge with garlic bread and cheese, my friend had a jacket potato & her little girl had tomato pasta which they both enjoyed & was so reasonably priced (under £10 for both of us meal and drink) and a good meeting place location wise for us.

Their carvery rightly deserves its own mention, it is DELICIOUS and worth so much more than it costs! At least one or two sundays a month we choose to eat our roast there because by the time you buy and do it yourself you can eat a large roast dinner there without the washing up! They always offer beef, turkey and gammon, loads of vegetables and their roast potatoes are lovely. At £7.99 for a standard carvery you can’t go wrong!

Honestly, The Dick Turpin has had a bit of a bad name in recent years but the carvery is lovely, the softplay and park entertains the little ones and it won’t break the bank + the new drinks menu is great!

Keep up the good work!
