Although we’ve had a potty in the house a good 6/7 months, there’s never been a ‘right time’ to start so all my half hearted efforts of hoping that the odd morning here and there would help him to establish potty training have fallen on deaf ears.
Saying that, when I do put his big boy pants on him, he does well to do a wee in the potty.. When no one is about, most times he has succeeded in using the potty, I have been absent in another room and he has come strolling in, pants half pulled up round his little bum and declared he has gone on the potty which leads to me running into bathroom to see that he yes has done a wee on the potty (bit of spillage but we can live with that) and engulf him in a ‘Look Who’s Talking’ Kirstie Alley & John Travolta type moment A PEE PEE ON THE POTTY, YAY, A PEE PEE ON THE POTTY, YAY! It’s always short-lived, he has then weed on a pile of clothes just stood there brazen and gone up my sofa, just like a puppy marking his territory, within the hour a poo follows usually in his big boy pants or in other obscure places – The kid is just not understanding the common mantra ‘DON’T POO YOUR PANTS’.
I bought him pants to begin with Paw Patrol and Peppa Pig characters on, but as well as freaking out so much at the thought of piddling on Marshall or Daddy Pig I felt like he looked uncomfortable in them so I went out and bought some more with no character emblazoned on them and the next size up. Well, those pants definently do not catch poos the same way a nappy does, think of a toy dispenser, in goes the money, out comes the prize, the pants literally drop 30cm and Frankie would continue mooching around, unbothered by the ton of shit swinging between his legs so I decided to get trunks instead!
Finding trunks under 5 years of age proved difficult but I ended up buying these x2 packs of 3 trunks for £5 each from good ole’ Peacocks!
The last two weeks Frankie has been good at using the potty for weeing, he tells me when he needs to go and hasn’t had an accident either. He has managed one dry night at the weekend (only because he had done a poo literally just before bed I decided to see how he went through the night in just trunks, no nappy) but has only successfully done one poo on the potty and that was only because I managed to catch up mid-changing him.
I’ve persevered and lost a handbag through letting him roam in just pants to come and declare he had done a poo in Mummy’s room leaving me to go on a mission trying to find where my darling had dropped off the kids, in Mummy’s Kurt Geiger bag, cheers darling, a literal shit load of sweetcorn the night before there was no saving the KG!
So after speaking with friends that have potty trained, family members and reading articles online, it seems that consistency is key and I have been anything but, on my working days (Mon, Tues, Weds) I haven’t been implementing the potty, just putting him straight in a nappy for nursery which of course is misleading to him & surely confusing. Thursdays & Fridays we are always out and about so it’s easier to just stick a nappy on and the weekend he could be at Nannys/Out and about/Kids party etc etc. so there’s no sense of guidance for him. Nannie has been briefed for Monday & I’ve bought extra trunks to leave there This morning I had a chat with nursery who have told me to pack his bag next week with loads of changes of bottoms and they will take the Tuesday/Wednesday shift.
This week I have decided to take advantage of my 5 full days off work and go gung-ho on the potty! We go to Camber Sands Weds-Fri tomorrow so I’ve decided to go cold turkey, risk trunks and take advantage of our full time together. I won’t condone him for not using the potty, I’m going to take it easy, I’m hoping the weather will be nice down on the coast so he won’t need to have much on making it easier to implement.
Wish us luck! I will keep a P/T diary and blog how we go! I have literally no high hopes so if I am a failure, you heard it here first!
Any advice feel free to comment! x
